Jim Downey has been a legendary fixture, and one of the most respected coaches in the Southern California club and high school volleyball scene for thirty years. For 28 seasons Jim has been a mainstay in the coaching ranks at Orange County Volleyball Club, where his teams have continually been amongst the best in the SCVA region. While at Orange County, Jim was the head coach of the 16’s age group, where he supervised all of the coaches, coordinated practice instruction and monitored player progress club wide. In an era when the Volleyball Festival in Davis, California was the premier junior volleyball National Championship in the country, Jim’s teams at Orange County won an impressive 8 national titles in various age divisions.
Jim has received special recognition from Volleyball Festival for his contribution to the sport. Jim also has left an impressive legacy in the high school ranks as the former head coach of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. Jim led his program to four consecutive State Final appearances while capturing 2 State Titles and 4 CIF Titles along the way. Jim has accumulated numerous personal awards for his high school coaching achievement, as he has been previously been named the Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year, Orange County Register Coach of the Year, and CIF Coach of the year.
